Colossians 4:8-11
What does it truly mean to become an unlikely hero? In the Bible, God often chooses those who seem unprepared, flawed, or even unwilling, to accomplish extraordinary purposes. This message invites us to explore the lives of John Mark, a runaway disciple, and Onesimus, a runaway slave—two men whose failures could have defined them, yet became stepping stones for God’s redemptive work. Both abandoned their responsibilities, yet through divine grace, their stories were transformed into testimonies of faith, forgiveness, and restoration.
John Mark, once a deserter, later became a trusted companion of the Apostle Paul and the author of one of the Gospels. Onesimus, once a fugitive, returned to his master Philemon not as a servant but as a forgiven brother in Christ, ultimately becoming a leader in the early church. Their lives illustrate that God’s calling is not thwarted by human weakness; rather, His power is often made perfect in our imperfection.
These accounts remind us that no failure is final when Christ is at work. God restores, redeems, and calls us back into His service, using ordinary people to accomplish extraordinary purposes. What failures or doubts might you bring to Him today? How could God transform your story into a testimony that points others toward hope, grace, and the unstoppable power of His love?
