Matthew 15:1-20
This teaching confronts the danger of religious lip service, revealing the difference between outward ritual and inward devotion. Jesus exposes the Pharisees and scribes, who honored God with their words but whose hearts were distant, trading obedience for tradition and truth for ceremony. Their practices appeared holy, yet their hearts were hollow, showing that true worship is measured not by actions alone, but by the condition of the heart.
When challenged about His disciples breaking tradition, Jesus asked, “Why do you yourselves transgress the commandment of God for the sake of your tradition?” He made clear that what defiles a person is not what enters the mouth, but what comes out of it—our words, actions, and intentions reveal the true state of our hearts before God. Faith is not performance; it is sincere obedience and love that flow from a heart fully surrendered to Him.
Even today, the temptation of “lip service” persists in churches, culture, and within ourselves. Jesus calls us to a pure, personal, and authentic faith—one that values relationship over ritual, truth over tradition, and holiness over pretense. How might you examine your own heart today, trading empty words for genuine devotion and embracing a faith that truly honors God?
