Matthew 22:15-22
Jesus faces a trap—a calculated scheme by the Pharisees and Herodians designed to ensnare Him with His own words. The topic: taxes. Their question was perilous: “Is it lawful to pay taxes to Caesar, or not?” Any answer risked angering either the people or the Roman authorities. Yet Jesus, with divine wisdom, pierced through their hypocrisy and responded: “Render to Caesar the things that are Caesar’s, and to God the things that are God’s.”
In this statement, He reveals a timeless truth about loyalty, authority, and worship. While governments may require taxes, God demands our hearts. The coin bore Caesar’s image, but we bear the image of God, making our ultimate obligation spiritual. We are called to submit to rightful earthly authority while keeping our highest allegiance fixed on the One who reigns above every throne.
Jesus reminds us that worship belongs to no human ruler or system—only to God. Obey the law, pay your taxes, pray for your leaders, but never surrender your soul. Give to God what is His: your faith, your love, and your worship. How might living in this balance of earthly obedience and heavenly devotion transform your daily choices and priorities?
