Exodus 31:12-17
On Mount Sinai, God commanded Israel to honor the Sabbath, a sacred sign of His covenant and a reminder of the divine pattern of work and rest. The seventh day was not merely a pause from labor, but a picture of a deeper rest that can only be found in Christ. True rest is not earned; it is received, a gift that refreshes the soul and points to the eternal peace He provides.
Work without rest leads to exhaustion and death. Under the Old Covenant, breaking the Sabbath brought physical consequences. Today, striving to earn salvation through our own efforts leads to spiritual emptiness. Human attempts to justify ourselves before God can never succeed, but the finished work of Jesus offers what our labor cannot—peace, forgiveness, and everlasting rest.
The Sabbath foreshadowed Christ, the ultimate rest for weary hearts. He ends the ceaseless striving of humanity and fulfills God’s promise of renewal. Through faith, we enter His rest, not by ritual, rules, or human effort, but by trusting in what He has already accomplished. How might your life change if you ceased striving and truly rested in the One who has completed everything for you, finding refreshment in His work and life in His resurrection?
